HOWARD and FLOWERS
Sumter Co., GA 1840-1860
submitted by Karon Bosze

Seeking further information on the family of William FLOWERS and Elizabeth
[PHILLIPS]. This couple was supposedly married in Robeson Co., NC on 18 Jan
1832, yet the 1850 census for Sumter Co., GA gives Elizabeth a birthdate of
circa 1820. (Perhaps, she was a VERY young bride. Not unheard of, but not
that common either).

The 1850 Sumter Co., GA census shows the William FLOWERS family to be
comprised of the following (whom I presume to be children):

1. Abi, b. GA, ca 1834, female [LDS shows her as a "him"; marriage records
online at Ancestry.com hint that she was married to William ELLIS in Aug 1850,
Sumter Co., GA].
2. Mary, b. GA, ca. 1835.
3. William, b. GA, ca. 1838
4. Jaratt, b. GA, ca. 1840
5. Green, b. GA, ca. 1843 (probable military service in 10th Batt'n GA Inf in
CW].
6. Augustus, b. GA, ca. 1845 [Alfred Augustus at LDS site and a couple other
sites on the Internet, b. 1844; probable military service in 10th Batt'n GA
Inf in CW].
7. Amanda, b. GA, ca 1847.
8. Jesse, b. GA ca. 1823-1827 (brother to William? older son?)

In 1850, living next door to William and Elizabeth FLOWERS were my 3rd
great-grandparents: Harmon(d) HOWARD and Charlotte [FLOWERS]. By 1860, they
were living in Columbia, Henry Co., AL and are indexed as COWARD in the 1860
AL Census index by Vern Jackson. They had at least 3 children:

1. Elizabeth A. HOWARD, b. 21 Sep 1847, [Sumter Co.,] GA
2. W. H. HOWARD (son), b. ca. 1854, [Sumter Co.,] GA
3. Thomas J. HOWARD b. ca. Aug-Nov 1859, [Henry Co.,] AL

Harmon, b. ca. 1826 in GA; July 1864 in Washington, DC; he served as a private
in the Civil War in Co. A, 61st AL Inf Reg't and died of gunshot wounds
incurred during Gen'l Jubal Early's attack on Ft. Lincoln, Washington DC.
Charlotte remarried to Edward BEARD (possibly Edward Francis BEARD, a
neighbor, who was enumerated in the 1860 census as "Francis"). Charlotte's
gravestone supposedly reads that she was the wife of E.F. BEARD and both she
and Edward are said to be buried at the Camp Springs Baptist Church cemetery,
near Haleburg, Henry Co., AL.

Elizabeth was known as "Lizzie" and was married to Lewis LaFayette "Fette" or
"Fate" DOUGLAS(S), s/o Lewis and Mary DOUGLAS(S). She is my 2nd GGM. Her
granddaughter (my maternal GM), Bertha Mae HELMS married William Winfred
JOHNSON (s/o Henry Washington JOHNSON and Sarah Delilah ARNOLD). This DOUGLAS
family probably has roots in SC. Would like to identify parents of Lewis
DOUGLAS and his wife, Mary.

W.H. HOWARD is believed to be William H. HOWARD, b. 16 Dec 1853, d. 13 Nov
1820, buried at Camp Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

Thomas J. "Tom" HOWARD was possibly married to a woman with the initials
"S.L." and had daughters Alice (b. 18 Dec 1885, d. 5 Jan 1886) and Ollie, who
married my great-uncle, Donnie Lee JOHNSON (s/o Henry Washington JOHNSON and
Sarah Delilah ARNOLD).

Any and all information gratefully appreciated. Will exchange information.
