Apr. 22,1892  Major M. Speer, et. al., left on merchants' excur-
              sion on the SAM to Montgomery; "Merrytown Gossip -
              Mr. P.L. Chambliss of Americus has been spending a
              few days in Merrytown, the guest of Mr. Worthy.  He
              brought his fishing tackle with him, and we have
              been feasting on fish.  They caught nine pounds of
              fish at one time in nets.  We invited our nearest
              neighbor, Mr. and Mrs. A. Robinson's family to help
              us eat fish.; Mrs. E.J. Speer has been almost a
              cripple for several days with rheumatism in one
              foot, but we are glad to say she is getting about
              again."

              Major Speer a good farm of 250 acres..." 
Jan.  4,1896  "Mr. Walter Robinson, one of Macon county's best
              farmers, has removed to Sumter and will locate six

              nors.  Mr. Speer does not live on his place at pre-

Feb. 13,1908  "MRS. ELIZA J. SPEER DEAD AT HOME HERE - Mrs. Eliz-
              abeth J. Speer...died yesterday morning at the res-
              idence of her daughter, Mrs. A. Robinson...with
              whom she had long resided...pneumonia being the 
              cause...mother of Mr. Hugh Speer...other sons and
              daughters...in Florida..."
Sept  4,1908  "While working about the ginhouse on Mr. C.L. Ans-
              ley's plantation yesterday John Hugh Robinson, son 
              of the farm superintendent, had his hand and arm 
              badly lacerated by the gin.  In attempting to re-
              move a pile of motes from beneath the gin the young 
              man put one hand too far into the machinery where 
              it was caught by the saws and sliced into ribbons 
              ..."; "Good Farm For Rent - Five horse farm, 9 
              miles exactly south of Americus, known as the Wor-
              thy place...Good neighborhood school also Methodist 
              and Baptist Churches close by...CHAS. L. ANSLEY."
Sept  7,1909  "Mr. Arin Robinson, who resides upon his farm near 
              Americus, had the misfortune to get his hand in a 
              busy cotton gin while at work a day or two ago, the 
              razor-like saws slicing off his fingers.  Mr. Rob-
              inson is the third member of his family to thus be 
              injured, two sons having had their hands cut in 
              cotton gins some time since."
Feb. 24,1911  "Leslie - Miss Vera Robinson has been the charming 
              guest of Mrs. H.L. Speer the last week."
Jan.  5,1912  SGP - "Leslie Dots - Mr. W.C. Ansley has purchased 
              the residence formerly occupied by Mr. H.L. Speer 
              and will move in soon.  We welcome them as citizens 
              of our village.  Mr. H.L. Speer and family have 
              moved to the residence of Mr. John Sims near 
              town."
Feb. 23,1912  SGP - "Leslie Happenings - We would also mention
              the organization of the "Royal Ambassador" by Mrs.
              H.L. Speer, the society consists of the boys of our
              town who want to learn to work for the church, its
              purpose being the culture and religious improvement
              of those who become members."

              ted to live.  Mr. Robinson who has passed his
              eightieth milestone in life, has been confined to
              his home for more than a year from illness.  He is
              said to have become worse within the past few days. 
              Mr. and Mrs. Robinson are receiving the careful at-
              tention of doctors and nurses, but due to their ex-
              treme old age, fears are entertained for their re-
              covery."

              neighbor of Will's - now living in Ellaville - 
              rushed into his garden, pulled up the largest onion 
              he could find and applied it to the artery which 
              was spouting blood in spite of an improvised tour-

Nov. 23,1956  "FORMER LESLIE RESIDENT BURIED - Burial services 
              were to be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday from the Les-
              lie Baptist Church for Hugh Lawson Speer, 89, for-
              mer resident who died Thursday at the Pineworth
              Hospital in Macon.  Mr. Speer was a member of the
              Leslie Baptist Church.  The Revs. Ira Faglier and
              C.H. Hornsby officiated at the rites.  Survivors
              include a daughter, Mrs. Judson Cheves, Griffin,
              and three sons, Alva E. Speer, Ochlochnee, Herbert 
              L. Speer, Pahokee, Fla., and John S. Speer, Dahlo-
              nega; also five grandchildren and seven great-
              grandchildren.  Interment was in the Leslie ceme-
              tery.  Rees Park Chapel of Americus was in charge
              of arrangements."
